How To Remove Makeup

When you get home after a hectic day at work, a long commute or a little too much fun on the weekend, the last thing you feel like doing is taking the time to properly take off your makeup. But it is SO important to not be tempted to ditch the routine and hop straight into bed. Your skin will definitely not thank you in the long run if you do this! Instead, we’ve got some very good advice for you. So if you asking how to remove makeup, we’ve got the best way to take it off and leave your skin really fresh, clean and healthy.

You may be thinking, why do I need to know how to take my makeup off, surely i can just use a makeup wipe, right? WRONG! Makeup wipes are good for getting the top layer of dirt and makeup off your skin, but they really do not do anything else. They don’t really clean, cleanse or rid your face of nasty oils and bacteria that tends to build up during the day. They ARE however a good first step in your cleansing routine. So here’s what you need to do:

Items you will need:
– Makeup Wipes (we suggest Neutrogena Cleansing Towelettes).
– Face Wash (we suggest Clearasil Gentle Skin Perfecting Wash).
– Clean
– Warm water
– A Wash Cloth
– A Makeup Cleanser (we suggest Nivea Micellar Water).
– Flat Cotton pads
– Moisturiser or night cream (we suggest The Body Shop’s Vitamin E Nourishing Night Cream).
– OPTIONAL: Face Mask Scrub (we suggest L’Oreal Pure Clay Glow Scrub).

Step 1:

First things first, you need to get rid of that top layer that will now be made up of a combination of foundation, powder (and any other makeup you use), bacteria, oil and dirt. I know that sounds gross, but it really is so true. Throughout the day, your face goes through a lot and no matter what you do, there will definitely be buildup that you won’t actually even be able to see when you look in the mirror. To get rid of that top amalgamation of dirt and makeup, simply grab your makeup wipes and start to wipe away. And remember, gentleness is key! Don’t rub too hard that you leave your skin red raw, but do make sure you are wiping enough…balance is key here. We suggest using around 1-2 wipes, but don’t waste them by using anymore as the next steps will continue to cleanse your skin.

Step 2:
Next, it’s now time to scrub! You wouldn’t believe how much residue of makeup and dirt will still be left of your face, even after using a makeup wipe. This is why makeup wipes are not enough on their own to fully clean and cleanse your skin. So run some warm water from the tap and prepare for a deep clean, it’s really not even hard! All you have to do is get your face wash or scrub, then wet your (clean) hands under the tap and squeeze a dime sized drop of face wash into your hands. Lather the product in your hands. Then using circular motions, scrub the face wash thoroughly around your face, not forgetting to get right up into your hairline and under chin. There is a lot of makeup and dirt that builds up in such areas so it is important to get right in there. Once your face is fully covered and fully rubbed it, then start to rinse the product off your face with warm water.

After the face wash has all been rinsed off, dab your face dry with a clean washcloth. Ahhhh, refreshing!

Step 3:

Now, it’s time to cleanse! Although you may now think that all the makeup is gone, we think you may find that this next step might show you otherwise. Now this step is of course optional, but if you want picture perfect skin, we advise you to add it in.

Grab a handful of flat cotton pads and your micellar water and you’re good to go. Squirt a small amount of micellar water onto the first cotton pad (enough to see but not too much that the pad is soaking wet), and then begin gently rubbing the pad around your face in circular motion. Again, not without forgetting to reach your hairline as well as under your chin. You will be amazed to see that dirt and makeup is actually probably still coming off at this point, crazy right?! It won’t be a lot since you’ve already used a makeup wipe and a face scrub, but there’s always room for more cleansing. Do this for 1-2 minutes. Then let it dry.

Step 4:

Last but not least you need to add some moisture back into your skin! Even if you don’t suffer from particularly dry skin, after doing all of the above your skin will definitely be craving some well deserved hydration. So grab your face moisturizer or night cream and dab some all over your face. Gently rub it in so that your face and the top of your neck area is covered. The reason we suggest The Body Shop’s Vitamin E Nourishing Night Cream is because it intensely hydrates your skin overnight and replenishes it’s hydration levels. It also leaves your skin feeling extra soft and smooth for when you wake up in the morning! If you skip the moisturizer, you may end up waking up with drier skin than you are used to, which you do not want!

EXTRA STEP:
Before putting on your overnight moisturising cream, 1-2 times per week, add this step before. Using a face mask like the L’Oreal Pure Clay Glow Scrub will draw out any excess dirt, makeup or oil that have built up over the days. This mask in particular combines 3 Pure Clays + Red Algae extract which leaves skin with brighter, smoother and fresher skin.
