I think we can all agree that stretch marks are not a pretty sight. If you happen to have them then I am sure you know how embarrassing having them can be and how getting rid of them can be an uphill task. How insecure they make us feel. Imagine wanting to put on that bikini but you can’t because of those annoying stretch marks. Ugh!
Stretch mark removal can be a tough task to accomplish. This journey requires a lot of resilience and sacrifice. Nothing good ever comes without hard work. Natural stretch mark removal is a great option – not only does it work, but it is very affordable.
What Are Stretch Marks?
Pregnancy stretch marks
Stretch marks, also known as striae, are scars that develop when the skin stretches due to abrupt changes like rapid growth or even weight gain. When the skin over-stretches, the dermis tears and the result is formation of stretch marks.
Their color may differ from one person to another due to skin complexion. The color usually varies from pink, dark brown, red, reddish brown or purple at first then later these lines begin sinking beneath your skin taking a whitish-silvery color.
Do not let their change in color fool you into thinking that they have receded. Fighting stretch marks is not easy. You will need to practise a lot of patience, but in the end, it is totally worth it. Gaining your once lost self-confidence and having flawless skin doesn’t sound bad, does it?
Why Stretch Marks Occur
Stretch marks occur when your skin stretches for whatever reason. Your body may stretch due to different reasons like
- Pregnancy
- Rapid weight gain
iii. Growth spurts especially during puberty
- Bodybuilding
- If you have a family history of stretch marks
- If you have health conditions like Marfan’s syndrome or Cushing’s syndrome
vii. Prolonged use of corticosteroids
How Stretch Marks Occur
Stretch marks occur when the production of collagen is interrupted due the overstretching of skin, therefore resulting into scarring of the skin. These scars are now what we call stretch marks. Collagen is the protein found in our skin responsible for skin elasticity. So basically, when the skin overstretches, collagen production is negatively affected, thus forming scars that we now refer to as stretch marks. Simple.
When stretch marks first occur, they may appear to be slightly raised and wrinkly but with time they tend to flatten.
Where Stretch Marks Occur
Most of the times, stretch marks affect areas where there is fat storage. These usually are:
- Belly/ stomach/ tummy
- Thighs
iii. Breasts
- Buttocks
- Shoulders
- Upper arms
Who Gets Stretch Marks?
Contrary to popular belief, stretch marks do not only appear on women’s’ bodies. They can appear on anyone due to the reasons discussed above. However, they happen to be more common in women during and after pregnancy.
- Pregnant women
There’s nothing as awe-inspiring as nurturing and bringing forth a life. It is a beautiful gift. But it comes a cost sometimes. In form of stretch marks. Most women get stretch marks during pregnancy due to the overstretching of the tummy. During pregnancy, as the baby grows, the tummy keeps growing in order to create room for the growing baby. This mostly happens in the third trimester.
Hormonal changes during pregnancy could also be a cause of stretch marks since the changes could lead to the weakening of skin fibers, resulting in formation of stretch marks.
These stretch marks can also affect the breasts and thighs since during pregnancy most women experience an increase in size of the breasts and thighs.
It is important to note that not every pregnant woman gets stretch marks. It all depends on every woman’s skin elasticity and type.
- People suffering from obesity
This affects both men and women. Obesity leads to weight gain. Gaining weight leads to overstretching of the skin, which in turn leads to development of stretch marks. It is like a chain reaction.
- Body builders
Rapid increase in muscle size due to body building can also lead to developing of stretch marks. As the muscle size increases, the skin stretches and stretch marks are then formed.
- People experiencing rapid weight gain
Gaining a substantial amount of weight over a short time period can not only be harmful to your health, but can also lead to stretch mark appearance. The same goes for rapid weight loss. If you lose weight try to do it slowly and constantly. This ensures that there is minimal straining of the skin.
- Teenagers experiencing puberty
The issue of stretch marks during puberty can be a very touchy one, so parents should ensure to bring it up in a sensitive manner that won’t sound judgy. Encourage them that they are not the only ones facing this issue. Stretch marks that appear during puberty are caused by growth spurts. They affect both boys and girls. Girls may get them on their breasts or thighs. As for the boys, they may appear on their backs and shoulders since these are the areas that experience the most stretching.
- People with certain health conditions
Individuals with health conditions like Marfan’s syndrome or Cushing’s syndrome may develop stretch marks.
Marfan’s syndrome- It is a genetic disorder that weakens the connective tissues leading to reduced elasticity making the body vulnerable to getting stretch marks.
Cushing’s syndrome- It refers to a condition that occurs due to high cortisol hormone levels in the body. Stretch marks are a side effect of having high levels of cortisol hormones.
- People with a family history of stretch marks
We neither get to choose our lineage nor our genetic make up. This is out of our control. If you have a close relative for example a parent with stretch marks, chances of you getting stretch marks are very high.
- Prolonged use of corticosteroids
Corticosteroids are medications used for relief of inflammation in different parts of the body. They lessen itchiness, allergic reactions and swellings caused by different diseases like asthma, allergies, arthritis and skin problems. Corticosteroids are found in different lotions and creams used in the treatment of these conditions.
Prolonged use of these corticosteroids can lead to reduction in the amount of collagen in your skin, increasing chances for development of stretch marks. It is therefore important to ensure that you do not overuse or abuse them.
Treating Stretch Marks
Do you have stretch marks and have been wondering just what you are going to do in order to rid yourself of them? Worry no more. Here is a collection of 15 home remedies for stretch marks that have been proven to work. Try them out and see what works for you.
1. Aloe Vera Gel
The clear Aloe Vera gel can be seen within a cut leaf
This is my absolute favorite remedy! It works like magic. Aloe Vera is not just good for stretch mark removal but is also great for general skin health. It works wonders for hair too. If it were up to me, I would make sure that everyone has at least one plant in their homes. The Aloe Vera is a beautiful plant and its gel is just pure gold. That way you will have a place to run to whenever you have minor skin ailments.
Aloe Vera is well endowed with collagen. The collagen present in the Aloe Vera helps repair skin. It also has healing and anti-inflammatory properties. Antioxidants present in Aloe Vera also help in skin cell repair and enhancement of new skin cell generation.
It is better to use Aloe Vera gel extracted from fresh Aloe Vera as opposed to already packed gel. The fresher the better.
How to extract Aloe Vera gel from a plant
If you happen to have an Aloe Vera plant, and a large one for that matter, then you are on the right track since obviously this is the first step. Next, choose a thick leaf and cut it with a sharp knife at the base of the plant.
After cutting the leaf, you will notice a yellowish substance coming out of the leaf. That is not the Aloe Vera gel. The gel we are talking about has a clear color. Let the yellow stuff ooze out then wash and dry your leaf.
Now lay it flat on a flat surface and cut it open lengthwise. You will see a clear gel. Scoop the gel with a spoon. If you are up for if, you can put the gel in a food processor and puree it. This is totally optional though.
How to use it
You will require Aloe Vera gel and warm water.
Preparation and Use

This juice is good for general body health so be sure not to waste the nutrients.

Raw Shea butter has a yellowish color and sold in bars or blocks.
Properties of Shea butter
When it comes to stretch marks removal, Shea butter works wonders because it is filled with vitamin A and E which are great for improving skin elasticity. These vitamins are also great for stretch marks removal since they help with the replacement of damaged elatin and collagen fibers. Damage to these two is what brings about stretch marks.
Shea butter also contains fatty acids which help in keeping the skin ultra hydrated. The more hydrated the skin, the lesser the chances to develop stretch marks. It does this by replacing the lost fatty acids.

A bowl of olive oil
Olive oil has fondly been nicknamed the Liquid Gold from the gods. And for good reason. You can cook with it, you can use it in your hair, and you can use it on your skin. Plus, it is no coincidence that people from the Mediterranean, the home of olive oil, have the lowest mortality rates in the world.
So, it’s no surprise that this miracle oil can also do wonders for your stretch marks.
How Does It Work?
There are several varieties of olive oil:
- Virgin Olive Oil: This is the most popular olive oil variety. It has a very low acid content and is perfect for cooking. It is also very economical, as anyone who wants to lead a healthier lifestyle can afford it.
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil: It is considered the best olive oil for the human body. However, it can be a little expensive, so not everyone can afford it.
- Pure Olive Oil: It is a mixture of refined virgin oil and normal virgin olive oil. It has a high acid content. This makes it unsuitable for cooking.
- Lampante Oil: It is an olive oil variety that is used as fuel.
Olive oil has antioxidants that improve the health of your skin when applied to it. It also contains linoleic acid, a substance that is not naturally produced by the body. Linoleic acid helps improve the water retention capabilities of your skin, and prevents water loss from the skin through evaporation. It goes without saying that a moisturized skin is less susceptible to stretch marks than a dry skin.
How to use it
Using olive oil for stretch mark treatment is as simple as rubbing a generous amount of olive oil on the affected area for about 5 minutes to let it seep into the skin.
The trick is to be consistent in application, because you will likely not notice any changes for the first three or so weeks. This is because the olive oil works from the inside out, and the results are only visible after several weeks of continuous daily use.
Olive oil can be a perfect remedy for stretch marks. For example if you are pregnant,if you start using it from the early months of pregnancy when your tummy starts to bulge, and keep using it daily till about three months after birth, you are almost guaranteed not to develop stretch marks at all. It really is that good!
However, not all hope is lost if you already have the wretched stretch marks. Rubbing olive oil on them daily for a few weeks will yield visible results.
You can also combine it with other remedies like honey, lemon juice, coconut oil, castor oil or Aloe Vera for faster results. Find a winning combination that works for you and stick to it. Like we said, the trick is consistency.

To find out if you are allergic, rub a little apple cider vinegar on your wrist and let it sit for the rest of the day. If by the end of the day (8+ hours) you would have not experienced any reaction to it, then you are good to go!
To use apple cider vinegar for your stretch marks, all you would need is the vinegar and water. Prepare a two part water to one part apple cider vinegar solution and massage this solution on the affected area. Massage it into your stretch marks for about 5 to 10 minutes. Repeat this process daily.
Alternatively, you can get a little more creative by dabbing a piece of cotton wool and wiping each stretch mark lengthwise. Remember to do the wiping along the stretch mark as opposed to across it. Use one cotton pad per stretch mark, and firmly wipe each stretch mark 5 to 10 times. This removes the dead upper layer of skin and exposes the healthier more even toned lower layer. Doing this daily will yield rapid results within just a few weeks.
After a dose of apple cider vinegar, your skin will feel really refreshed. However, if left alone, it will dry up really quickly. It is important to wipe down the cleansed area with a clean wet cloth after about 15-35 minutes of letting it sit (depending on your patience levels), and moisturizing with your moisturizer of choice.
This could be your normal moisturizing lotion, a specialized cocoa butter lotion with added skin care benefits, or your all natural moisturizing home remedy of coconut oil, olive oil or castor oil.
Preventing Stretch Marks
Prevention is better that cure, I am sure that sounds cliche but fact is that it is true. Although there is no sure way to prevent stretch marks, there are measures that one can take to minimize the chances of stretch marks developing.
One way is to prevent abrupt weight gain. When it comes to losing or gaining weight, ensure that you do that slowly and steadily. Check your diet by eating healthy so that you lose weight in a manner that’s safe.
During pregnancy it is expected that one gains weight as the pregnancy progresses. However, this does not give us an excuse to eat unhealthy foods that will accelerate the speed at which weight is gained. If this happens, then developing stretch marks cannot be avoided.
It is also important to stay hydrated. Water is great for hydration. Take at least 10 glasses of water everyday to ensure your skin remains hydrated. The more hydrated your skin is, the less chances stretch marks have to develop.
Emotional effects of stretch marks
Stretch marks are harmless to the body. However, they may cause negative emotional effects to whoever has them through loss of self esteem.
They can stop people from living their normal lives. For example, if you love the beach and you used to enjoy spending time at the beach before developing stretch marks, you might find that after getting them you might feel insecure putting on the same swimsuits you used to and therefore stopping going to the beach.
Important tips
- If you start seeing stretch marks breaking out, start treating them immediately. Do not let them get old since the older they get, the deeper they get into your skin. Stretch marks can be itchy, so do not scratch them because it can worsen the situation.
- The oils mentioned above can be moderately warmed for faster absorption to the skin.
- Do not use any of these remedies on cuts, wounds, bruises or blisters
- If you experience redness, itchiness or rashes, you are probably allergic to that remedy and you should switch to a different one
- Moisturizing if very important. For remedies that require washing off after allowing them to sit for some time, you should moisturize your skin afterwards.
- Drink plenty of water. Drinking water and having a healthy diet will increase your collagen levels and keep your skin healthy and hydrated.
- Even though you may really want to, scratching your itchy belly during pregnancy is a bad idea. It weakens the skin and makes your stretch marks form faster.
Conclusion
Home remedies are an affordable and effective way to combat stretch marks from the comfort of your home. However, they require one to have a little bit of patience, since they can take a lot of time to yield results. If you are looking for a quick fix, there are several medical procedures that can be performed in order to remove stretch marks. These include laser surgery, tummy tucks and sometimes even microdermabrasion. On the down side, as much as these procedures could work, they are very expensive and could come along with health risks. It is for these reasons that natural remedies are better and more advocated for.
It is vital to note that stretch marks take time to heal. The duration it takes for these stretch marks to disappear also varies from person to person, skin type and the amount of stretch marks. So if you happen to use any of these methods and are not seeing results, be patient. It will happen eventually. Good luck!
